It's surprising how many things these two really agree on and they are not that far apart of many other issues.
Both want illegals under removal orders to be apprehended and deported, especially criminals. I prefer that they be jailed or put to work building the border walls.

Gutierrez emphasizes the number of baby boomers that will be retiring but doesn't explain how a poor, uneducated immigrant can replace a chemical engineer, accountant or skilled sheetmetal worker. Let's expedite the immigration applications of those who can replace the boomers and have needed skills. Let's give "most favored" immigrant status to those who already speak English and have the skills we need to replace boomers.

We don't need legal immigrants to pick grapes, etc. We need migrant workers who are willing to return to their homelands when the harvest is in. Grape pickers will never replace boomers.

Gutierrez also avoids the question of unwanted population growth which I believe to be an inherent part of the immigration discussion.

Your points are well-taken ultima but you apparently confuse Gutierrez with someone who gives a damn about this country and its future. He doesn't -- he cares about increasing the power of la raza in the US, and that's it. In his mind it's entirely reasonable to replace retiring software programmers with illiterate grape pickers.
